How Are We Going About?

“If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn’t help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are… or we’ve got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don’t want to do it.”

(Stephen Colbert, quoted in Verse & Voice, Sojourners)

“I read in a book that a man called Christ went about doing good.  It was very disconcerting to me that I am so easily satisfied with just going about.” (Kagawa, quoted in Second Presbyterian church bulletin)

God, we pray that you are a forgiving God because, individually and collectively, we fall far short of your command to love the poor, serve the needy, welcome the stranger… Too often we are simply too apathetic and uncaring to make any effort at all; or we do just enough to convince ourselves that we are the good Christians we like to think we are.  Forgive us.  Transform us into compassionate people who allow our hearts to be broken by theunkindness and injustice of the world.  Give us grace to follow your command to love kindness, do justice, and walk humbly with you.
