Second Presbyterian Church

Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A.

We are called to be a witness to and for the world of the new reality which God has made available to all people in Jesus Christ. We seek "to know Him and to make Him known" in downtown Richmond and throughout the world.

Missionaries: In June 2006, Melanie and Scott Smith ended their most recent term in India, after visits to Assam and Nepal.  Writing about the recent situation with regard to funding for missions and missionaries, they wrote" "In a way, we have some survivor guilt: why do we still have a job?  The answer is because of our supporting churches.  Without them we could not work here."  After visits to England, Dallas, and Louisville, the Scotts now are settled in their house in Virginia.  They can be contacted by mail:  1701 Ginger Lane, Blacksburg, 24063, or by e mail: melscofam@sbcglobal.net.

The Dimmock's left Malawi in mid-July 2006, traveled to Kenya to attend daughter Jessica's graduation from Rift Valley Academy, and returned to the U.S. at the end of July.  Once again they will spend their furlough at Mission Haven, 167 Inman Drive, Decatur, GA, 30030 (phone 404-373-3733).  While the details of their next assignment are not known, they expect to return to Africa, but not to Malawi.  Their April 9, 2006, letter included news of an addition to their family: adopted son Jackson Albert Dimmock, who was then 15 months old, once very sick and now thriving thanks to their love and care.

2006 Mission Trips

Malawi Mission Trips:

In the summer of 2003, adults and youth from Second Presbyterian Church traveled to Malawi and established caring ties.  The mission group worked to build a feeding station for AIDS orphans, taught Bible school, and visited missionaries in Lilongwe, where Nancy Dimmock houses and cares for abandoned infants.  Meeting with the people of Malawi and sharing in their great faith in spite of their material poverty  was a rich spiritual experience.  It was a life-changing gift!

Our goal this year is to establish more permanent ties with a congregation in Malawi. We know that we will encounter needs in health care, education, and life-sustaining skills; we want to learn how to be most helpful.

We are excited about the developing relationship with people in this part of Africa.  We invite you to share in our excitement, anticipation, and hope.
