DCM-Walk-In Ministry: The
Walk-In Ministry, a project of the Downtown Community Ministry, provides
lunch meals Monday through Friday at five downtown churches:
Second Presbyterian
Church, St. Paul’s, Centenary United Methodist, St. Peter’s, and 3rd
Street Bethel AME, and on Saturday at Second Baptist on Idlewood Ave. Lunch
is provided at our Church each Monday. The meal is prepared and served not
only by members of our Church, but also by other area Presbyterian churches
that alternate in sending teams to Second to help cook and serve the meal.
In addition, some Presbyterian Womens Groups and churches give financial
help and donate food. Each month, Second Presbyterian sends $100 to the
Salvation Army and St. Paul’s Episcopal Outreach Program, used to provide
emergency assistance and bus tickets for the needy.
Elder Homes: This
is a non-profit agency in Richmond whose goal is to provide decent, safe,
and affordable housing to low-income persons by rehabilitating existing
homes, creating multi-family housing for the elderly, and providing home
ownership opportunities for low-income buyers. Contact John Myers (740-2049)
for more information.
Homeward: Created
in 1998 to reduce homelessness in Greater Richmond by initiating creative
solutions and by better coordinating regional resources and the service
delivery system. As the coordinating organization, Homeward brings together
homeless service providers; local governments; the faith, academic, and
business communities; homeless and formerly homeless individual; and
concerned citizens to combine efforts, resources, knowledge, and talents in
creating integrated and effective strategies and solutions to homelessness.
A five year plan was launched in 2001 with key
milestones: Year 1—Asses the system and secure stable funding; Year 2—Establish
the Healing Place and expand the mental health system; Year 3—Centralized
Intake and a homeless information system; Year 4—Service provider
reorganization, aftercare, and follow-up. Year 5—Integrate systems and
mainstream programs and services with a resolution by 2006.

Interfaith Housing Corporation: IHC
is a consortium of metropolitan Richmond congregations, business and
organizations who work together to develop safe, decent, and affordable
housing for low-income families and encourages responsible home ownership in
targeted neighborhoods. Current activity includes ongoing renovation and new
house development in several locations in the City of Richmond,
Chesterfield, and Henrico Counties. Families are prepared for home ownership
through an intensive education program that helps assure a successful
experience in acquiring and caring for one’s home.
