Children and Youth Church School

_________________________________________________________________________________________

A full range of church school classes are presented each Sunday, to include:

Children

Nursery Care is provided for our infants through toddlers (age 2) during church school and worship.  The infant, crawler and toddler rooms are located on the second floor of the Virginia Building, rooms 200-203.   Skilled paid workers and church members provide secure care for our children.

Three and Four Year Old  children will be using a  curriculum called "Bible Quest."  This is a PC(USA) curriculum resource.  This curriculum will prepare them for the types of activities they can expect in Covenant Quest when they reach kindergarten. Meet downstairs in the Hawes Building.

Kindergarten through Fifth Grade:  Covenant Quest is the children's new Christian Education program at Second Presbyterian.  We are using the Workshop Rotation Model, which recognizes that we all learn in different ways.  Creative, child-friendly workshops make this possible by using drama, art, audio-visual, computers, storytelling, music, puppets, food, and motion.

Children rotate by class into a different workshop each week for about a four to six week period.  During this time, the story they learn is the same in each workshop.  Children love the repetition and need it to remember the stories.  Each teacher teaches through a different learning style; the children do not get bored.  Instead, this multiple-intelligence approach enhances the learning process.

Kindergarten through fifth graders will meet in the dining room each week for an opening gathering, before attending one of the eight great workshops.  Each class will have a shepherd to attend the different workshops with them.  The rotation schedule will be posted in the dining room and on the second floor.

Music for Children.  Pre-school and elementary children have an opportunity to sing and enjoy music throughout the year. Please see the Music and Arts Page for details.

Youth

Middle School Church School includes youth in grades 6 through 8.  The class meets Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in room 309.  A new curriculum, Faith in Motion, has been selected and approved for this class.  This is a topic-oriented curriculum which helps youth connect issues in their daily lives with the scriptures.

Confirmation Class: Eighth graders and older youth who feel called to become full members of the church are invited to join the Confirmation Class.  The class begins with a retreat in late winter, and runs through spring. The pastors and Christian Educator will teach the class.  Interested youth should speak to Pastor Pen Peery.  For class schedule, click here.

High School Church School includes youth attending 9th through 12th grades.  Class members gather in the Conference Room on the third floor on Sundays at 9:30 a.m.  Classes will focus on the text for the day and current events.
